In 1398, the English word pineapple was first registered to describe coniferous trees’ reproductive organs, now known as pine cones. European scientists discovered this tropical fruit in 1664 and named it pineapples. Since pineapples were so rare centuries ago, only extremely wealthy people could afford them. People would even rent the exotic fruit to display at dinner parties. In 1677, the pineapple was such a coveted fruit in Europe that King Charles II of England posed for a portrait while holding a pineapple, an act that signified his royal privilege. 

In the present day, they are found in tropical and subtropical countries such as the Philippines, Indonesia, India, and China.

How to Prepare Pineapple

Pineapples can be found at grocery stores and markets all over the world. In the store, try to find a pineapple that is heavy for its size. It should be free of soft spots and dark spots. When the pineapple is ripe, the end should smell sweet.

This tropical fruit can be easily cut with a sharp knife. Cut off the top and bottom of the fruit so you have two flat surfaces. Peel the pineapple, then cut it into quarters. Avoid cutting through the core.

After enjoying a pineapple, you can use the top to grow another one. While you might not start your own pineapple farm, it’s a great way to avoid food waste.

The Best Way to Store Pineapples

Once the pineapple has been cut, you can leave it on the counter for a couple days. This will make it softer and juicier, but won’t alter its flavor. Be sure to eat the pineapple within 2-3 days since it goes bad quickly.

    • 3 oz Pineapple juice
    • 3 oz Mango juice

    3. Shake vigorously for 15 seconds.

Pineapple Jalapeno Smash

    • 3 oz Pineapple juice
    • 2 oz Bellion Vodka
    • 6 fresh pineapple chunks
    • 1-2 Jalapeno slices
    • ½ lime, juiced
    1. In a shaker, add pineapple, jalapeno, and lime juice.
    2. Muddle together until smashed and combined.
    3. Add Bellion vodka, pineapple juice, and a few ice cubes.
    4. Cover and shake for 10-15 seconds.
    5. Strain into a drinking glass with ice.
    6. Garnish with pineapple and jalapeno slices as desired.

Pineapple Moscow Mule

    • 4 oz Ginger beer
    • ½ lime, juiced
